A boy’s dream comes true for Becx and Kuijpers
Michiel Becx: “It finally begins!”
A boy’s dream comes true for Michiel Becx and Edwin Kuijpers: their first Dakar participation. They will drive the MitJet Off Road over the podium in Lima on Sunday evening and the first stage of the toughest rally in the world will start in Monday. The team passed the checks and scrutineering earlier today.
Becx enjoys the atmosphere to the fullest already in Lima: “It is amazing to see and be a part of it. We have driven several rallies and even in WRC. But all of that pales by what happens here during the Dakar. Such a big bivouac, everyone is friendly and supporting. The local people are seeing us as some kind of heroes, really special to witness.”
The checks and scrutineering have been completed without any issues. “It takes a long time to pass,” says Kuijpers. “We started with the administrative checks, then you will need to collect all the stamps at the several desks. Afterwards we had the scrutineering of the buggy, but because we had the pre-checks in Le Havre, that went quickly. And now we have to wait until the start!”
The podium ceremony will take place on Sunday in Lima and on Monday the first miles in the Peruvian sand are on the program. “The rally starts with a special of 84 kilometre from Lima to Pisco. It is a prologue, but it won’t be an easy stage. On the second stage the cars will start, so we are being tested firmly from the start!”
